Minimally Adequate Prison Mental Health System
Systematic program for screening and evaluating inmates in need
Treatment program with more than just segregation and supervision
Sufficient number of appropriately trained employees
Notes:
- In an attempt to further define the 8th Amendment requirements, the Idaho U.S. District Court in 1984 derived the “minimally adequate prison mental health system.”
- It isn’t mandatory authority in Virginia, but is illustrative of some useful actions to help uphold the 8th Amendment.
