Mentally Ill and Substance Abuse Disordered Inmates in Local Correctional Settings: A National Problem
Bureau of Justice (1999) estimate 16% of all jail inmates have problems with mental illness.
Of that group only 40% received any form of psychiatric treatment during admission.
Medication was the most prevalent modality.
50 – 65% had active involvement with drugs and/or alcohol.
Notes:
Background: Recent studies on a national scale have shown that a high percentage of jail inmates have MI or SA disorders. The BJS figure of 16% is by now an often cited estimate of the numbers of mentally ill inmates in local correctional facilities.
