Why are drug courts effective?
Drug Courts incorporate the principles of effective treatment outlined by the National Institute of Drug Abuse including:
- Treatment needs to be readily available.
- Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use.
- Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness
- Counseling and other behavioral therapies are critical components of treatment.
- Addicted or drug-abusing individuals with co-occurring disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated way.
- Possible drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously.
