HJR 551: Joint Subcommittee to Study Highway Noise Abatement

September 26, 2006

In the absence of a quorum, the joint subcommittee members in attendance discussed the various aspects of using vegetation as a means of highway noise abatement with Delegate Joe T. May, Chairman of the Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS). Delegate May suggested that the amount of vegetation required by federal standards may be too large in order to achieve the same amount of noise abatement provided by a typical noise wall. He mentioned that experimental products using material from recycled tires might be a way to lessen highway noise at a lower cost and invited the members to attend an upcoming meeting of JCOTS where this technology will be discussed.

Next Meeting

The members discussed attending the JCOTS meeting in conjunction with the next joint subcommittee meeting, when the members will discuss possible recommendations to the 2007 General Assembly. Meeting information will be posted on the General Assembly’s internet calendar.
