PREVENTING YOUTH SMOKING AND SAVING LIVES IN NORTH CAROLINAEffects of a 50-cent State Cigarette Tax Increase
Calculations from the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids
Notes:
A 50-cent per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax will prevent nearly 7,000 New Hampshire kids alive today from becoming addicted smokers, saving over 2,200 of them from an early death from smoking.
In addition, these smoking reductions would save $130 million in smoking related health care costs in New Hampshire.
The tax increase will also generate $89 million in new cigarette tax revenue
Overall, the cigarette tax is a proven strategy to protect thousands of New Hampshire kids from addiction to tobacco while, at the same time, funding important health care priorities
